finding peace
I give you peace, the kind of peace only I can give. It isn’t like the peace this world can give. So don’t be worried or afraid.” –Jesus (John 14:27)
Jesus contrasts two kinds of peace: the peace only he can give, and the kind of peace the world gives.
What’s the difference? The world’s peace is circumstantial, temporary and depends on us. The peace that Jesus offers is unconditional, eternal and depends on him. His peace is much more than the absence of problems or even a feeling of calmness. His peace includes completeness, fulfillment, wholeness, harmony, security, and well being.
So who is this Man that insists that if you have his kind of peace, you don’t need to be worried or afraid?
If you read any of the Gospels—and I hope you will—Jesus is proclaimed as and claims to be the one who brings “peace on earth,” understood as salvation for the entire world. He is the One who guides us into the way of peace. True, deep and lasting peace begins by making peace with God. And that is what Jesus offers us through his sacrificial death, burial and resurrection.
